ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION This chapter is concerned with certain aspects of the development of Modern Standard Chinese. It will be argued that Modern Standard Chinese shows the influence of various regional varieties of Chinese, and that the processes of dialect mixture, koineization and focusing have been factors in the development of Modern Standard Chinese.
