Prayers or invocations are not sharply defined as verbal performances, although, as cultural acts, they are of course very clearly identified.2 One is then under the impression that the context is the main and perhaps the sole factor responsible for the identification of these verbal performances as 'ritual acts' or 'religious performances'.
