ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses itself chiefly to the question 'Has the "sociolinguistic enterprise" made substantial progress in the last twenty years or so in moving towards a unified sociolinguistic theory of language?' It seems to me that there is not at the moment a single 'sociolinguistic enterprise' - there are several. But this is to be expected in a serious discipline, and it is a sign of health.
