ABSTRACT

Subtitle translation, usually discussed today in the field of audiovisual translation, has a much shorter history than translation in other fields. Subtitle translation did not appear until the early 1900s when motion pictures started to flourish, or, more accurately, not until globalisation of films started to gain momentum and audiences needed translation to help them understand a film made in a language foreign to them. Since subtitle translation has come with films, filmic codes of meaning inevitably play a role in it. Chaume (2004: 13) argues:

… for the analysis of audiovisual texts from a translational perspective at least, the theoretical contributions of Translation Studies and those of Film Studies are necessary. Both disciplines are crucial in the exegesis of audiovisual texts and become necessary in order to understand the interlaced web of meaning in these texts.
