ABSTRACT

Much emphasis has so far been placed on the role of cognition (in structuring and generating social behaviour). In the previous chapter, Bandura et ale indicate hota this cognitive iaork can be integrated lJ)ith actual behavioural skills training. This ohapter by Maloolm Coulthard (a linguist) foousses on the "behavioural" skills tah i eh. need to be thus integrated. HOlJ)ever, Coulthard's approach is embedded squarely in the agency approach, adopting a e t rue-: tiural: (i.e., linguistio) model rather than a parametrio (i.e., behavioural) model lJ)hioh virtually all other approaches to social skills training have preferred. The e t ruo t ural: model is highly germane to the ooqn i t i oe ap proaoh because it ehoiae hoia linguistic behaviour is generated by rules, whioh can be learned, and thus the behaviour generated in aocordanoe lJ)ith the rule, rather than in disorete elements.
