ABSTRACT

Any serious study of Chinese nationalism has to account for anti-Japanese sentiment, which has deep roots in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and in the recent political, ecnomic and national confl icts between the two countries. Since its emergence in the late 19th century, Chinese nationalism has undergone several major transformations. Throughout the 20th century, the goals and slogans of the country’s nationalists have changed frequently as a result of major historical events and popular movements. However, some of the themes of Chinese nationalism have remained unchanged over the past decades. Anti-Japanese sentiment is one of these enduring nationalist motifs.
