ABSTRACT
The invention of written symbols to represent speech must be regarded as one of the most important cultural developments in history. With these written symbols, language at last overcame the limitations of time and space. While all humans learn to speak effortlessly and naturally, learning to read has never been easy regardless of the type of orthography used. In fact, in most literate societies there are people who cannot master this skill.
