ABSTRACT

In John Huston’s movie Freud: The Secret Passion (1962) a very powerful scene pictures Freud presenting his theory of infantile sexuality to a large audience of educated men. His brief presentation is met with strong and loudly stated disapproval, interrupted by roaring almost after every sentence; several of the men leave the auditorium in protest, spitting on the floor next to Freud. At some point the chairman, trying to restore the order, cries out: ‘Gentlemen, we are not in a political meeting!’
