ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses international investment in real estate to and from China. It first examines foreign real estate investment as foreign direct investment (FDI) in China, and then total foreign money invested in China's real estate. The chapter then investigates rising real estate investment from China. Real estate investment from China has been rising since 2004 as Chinese businesses started to 'go abroad' following the government's policy support. FDI in real estate stagnated for a decade after 1995 and became less significant in terms of its proportion of total FDI and of total investment in real estate development. From 2005, foreign money came into China through non-FDI channels to take advantage of expected Renminbi appreciation and rising property prices, which led to a change in attitude by the government towards foreign investment in real estate. Nevertheless, foreign investment has been rising rapidly through formal and informal channels since 2005 and has mainly targeted the East of China.
