ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the forms of, the classification of, and the health risks from exposure to, hazardous substances. It explains the factors to be considered when undertaking an assessment of the health risks from substances commonly encountered in the workplace. The chapter explores the use and limitations of occupational exposure limits including the purpose of long-term and short-term exposure limits. It highlights control measures that should be used to reduce the risk of ill-health from exposure to hazardous substances. The chapter describes the hazards, risks and controls associated with specific agents. It examines the basic requirements related to the safe handling and storage of waste. Protection against biological hazards can be increased significantly by vaccination. Globally Harmonised System provides a basis for globally uniform physical, environmental, health and safety information on hazardous chemicals through the harmonisation of the criteria for their classification and labelling.
