ABSTRACT
Much general lighting design is now carried out with the aid of a computer. However, it is still important to understand how to calculate illuminance levels. Sometimes there are projects where feeding the information required into a computer would be too time-consuming for the simple calculation required. Again, it may be necessary to check that the answer obtained using the computer is correct. Understanding what is being done and having the ability to do it by hand, if necessary, both promote confidence.
