ABSTRACT

Shops and stores have a common purpose in the desire to sell their merchandise. How they endeavour to do this depends upon the sort of goods on offer. If they are selling essential goods, such as food, household cleaning products, etc., then much of their attraction is likely to be in the prices they charge. The lighting required in such a shop or store needs to be businesslike; that is, bright and well organised to indicate the route through the premises and to make it easy for customers to identify the product they require. A high level of general illuminance throughout the store from luminaires that do not cause glare is required, and in larger stores 600 to 800 lux is common. Hard-wearing, light-coloured, diffuse surfaces for walls and floors are particularly important to provide a good reflected component to the light (Figure 18.1).
