‘Alex & Emma’ is an amalgam of clichés about writers and burlesque stereotypes of foreigners. The French say ‘zees’ and ‘zat’ for ‘this’ and ‘that,’ the Germans bark out their courtesies like SS officers and beefy Cuban thugs talk like Charo puppets, as in ‘You pay us back or I’ll keel joo.’ So much for literary aspirations.
