ABSTRACT

On each student’s desk was a stack of the books they have read all year. The administrative team walked around, chatting with students about their choices, enjoying their enthusiastic responses as they described favorite books, authors, and plans for summer reading. I stopped in front of Casey, a project of mine since I had been his Title I Reading teacher many years ago when he was in elementary school. His face was not happy. “Casey,” I said, kneeling by his desk, “why the frown?” He crossed his arms and looked up at me. “I read a lot this year, Mrs. W., I swear! But the teacher said sports books didn’t count, so I only have these,” waving his hand towards the two classics on his desk. “These were the ones we read together.”
