ABSTRACT

Interest in Turkish cinema has never been stronger. The film industry is vibrant at home as well as on the international arena, receiving prestigious prizes at the Cannes, Berlin and Venice Film Festivals, participating in numerous panoramas and retrospectives worldwide, the comprehensive programme, ‘The Space Between: A Panorama of Cinema in Turkey’ at the Film Society of Lincoln Centre (April 27-May 10, 2012), a case in point. In 2012, local films represented 47 per cent of the total admission with 61 films, which is a long way from a decade ago when only nine Turkish films were released.
