ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we’ll continue our discussion on leadership by exploring how safety can be led in the workplace. We begin by considering how expanding corporate values into a set of safety principles can provide a strong platform to lead from, and how these can in turn help us to manage expectations around safety leadership more broadly. A return to the notion of authentic leadership is included to help bind the elements of values, principles and purpose together.

This chapter will then dive into the relatively recent concept of felt leadership to understand just what it is that makes this type of leadership quite so powerful when it comes to matters of safety. A model of felt leadership combing three interconnected pillars is presented to explore the impact of active leadership, the importance of worker involvement and the necessity of robust review.
