ABSTRACT

Performance measurement is an integral part of the effective management of occupational safety and workplace risk. All too often, though, we allow our metrics to revolve around the number of accidents or injuries that have occurred. This chapter will explain why this naïve approach can lead to the generation of a false sense of security and misguide us on our journey to safety excellence.

Leading and Lagging Indicators will be discussed – for safety and for health – before we explore a range of other ways of measuring the impact of our efforts to improve workplace occupational health and safety.

We’ll mull over the real purpose and function of performance measurement and then work through the six steps of setting effective performance indicators, so that by the end of this chapter, we’ve completed a 360 and you’re ready to consider how you can strip things back and measure safety and risk meaningfully in your own workplace.
