ABSTRACT

The content of this chapter is directed to professional horticulturalists, looking to use safe, integrated methods of control while maintaining a healthy respect for environmental issues. A very practical aspect of Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) is the specific requirement that all professional personnel involved with pesticides: the producers, the distributors, and the operators storing and applying pesticides, should demonstrate a high level of competence. The horticulturist using pesticides should be aware of their special requirements of choice of chemical, storage, mixing, application and of transport. The Act further required that chemical manufacturers, distributors and professional horticulturists should be able to demonstrate skills in the choice and careful management of pesticides. Integrated pest management is a combination of several different forms of control against a pest or disease that may be required for success, and this may involve biological, chemical, cultural or plant-resistance choices.
