ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on all the methods of using Digital Multiplex (DMX) to control a media server. The method for assigning DMX addresses will be determined by the server, and this varies greatly between server types. This channel mapping is what we call the DMX protocol, and all lighting console manufacturers use this mapping to create fixture personalities for their consoles. In the DMX protocol created by the manufacturer, a default value will be determined for each DMX control channel of the media server. The number of channels per layer can vary based on the desired programming mode. The mapping of DMX channels for a media server is created in much the same way as for an automated lighting fixture. How a personality for a digital lighting fixture or media server is written and displayed on the console has a tremendous impact on the performance of the lighting programmer.
