ABSTRACT

The advent of the Cuban film Fresa y chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate; Tomás Gutiérrez Alea 1993) provided a space to reconsider the representation of homosexuality in Latin American film. This is not the first film screened in the United States dealing with the treatment of homosexuality in a repressive Latin American political system, 1 but since it has obviously solicited a good deal of attention, one cannot detach its appeal from the ongoing political debate between the two countries (Cuba and United States). 2
