ABSTRACT

For the past decade or so, performance art has become a favorite vehicle used by subaltern artists for the articulation of their sociopolitical issues. 1 Due to its interdisciplinary approach and to its stress on the artist’s body and personal history, performance art has usually been regarded as an elitist and narcissistic medium. However, both Latin American and U.S. Latino artists have found in its conceptual language a means of readdressing political issues, and the way these affect the lives and bodies of oppressed people.
