ABSTRACT
Upon completing The Plumed Serpent in 1925, D.H. Lawrence had no desire whatsoever to begin another book. Rather, he decided between September of that year and October of 1926 to bolster his income by writing short stories for magazines and anthologies. Although he disliked the magazine format, the supplemental income, however modest, was welcome (Worthen 1989, 136-38).
