ABSTRACT
Henry Creswicke Rawlinson, who was then thirty-five-years old, had been Political Resident in Baghdad for two years. In the British colonial administration he had early become known as a specialist in Persian affairs and a great scholar with respect to its languages and literature; his articles about travels in the country had been among the most important things the young Layard had read to prepare himself for his journey.
