ABSTRACT

Layard went back to Mosul in October 1845. In a small informal note to the ambassador from 30 September he estimated the expenses as follows: §30 for the journey, 4–5 piastres per day per worker, 3–400 piastres a month for a guard, plus expenses for a small tent and a horse; in all he thought that it would cost some 15,000 piastres, corresponding to §138 — ‘say §150’.
