ABSTRACT

The natural resources of the United States, still breathtaking in their beauty and plenitude, are watched over in typical bureaucratic fashion by a bevy of federal agencies. As one might expect, the enterprise is often fraught with interbureau rivalries and political expediency. So fragmented and politicized are federal efforts to manage the great gifts nature has bestowed upon this fortunate country that conservation and environmental groups have been obliged to watch the bureaucrats with vigilance. Many fear that, if left unchecked, the forces of business and industry will turn our scenic wonders into one vast Levittown or shopping center. And even as the forces vehemently deny harboring such mean dreams for America, the bulldozers and wrecking crews stand poised and ready to raze.
