ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of distance learning and discusses some of the methods and technologies that characterize it. Relevant research about its effectiveness is reported. The chapter explores the challenges faced by libraries attempting to support distance learning and discusses pertinent issues related to collection development. Given recent advances in computer networking technologies coupled with increasing numbers of courses and degree programs delivered entirely on-line, the chapter focuses on the virtual course or online and Web-based distance learning.
