ABSTRACT
History glitters with stories of gold rushes, most of which faded as quickly as they surfaced. Some did not. The great California gold rush of 1849 helped change the face of America. But no one living then could have guessed that a century later a much different kind of gold rush would dwarf all our earlier ones.
