Politicians and promoters call this the best of times; a vocal minority takes the opposite view. The highly-respected Media Studies Journal, published as an open forum for journalists and informed scholars, devoted a whole issue in the winter of 2000 to Campaign 2000, deploring the poor standards, overreaction, and shoddy reporting that marks our times.
