Work about an author's whole new discursive practice, whether Freud's or Marx's or Dewey's or Foucault's, need not be work within that whole new practice, psychoanalysis, dialectical materialism, pragmatism, genealogy, or even be work consistent with that practice. The displacement of the author by the author-function would be the replacement of the "universal intellectual" by the "specific intellectual", the replacement of critique by criticism. The critics of critique must be fallibilists, proceeding patiently case by case, exposing in each case the question-begging logic, demonstrating each time that critique which proceeds by transcendental argument is a form of smuggling-even if those engaged in this smuggling do not recognize it. Authorship, long a habit, is only recently a vice. Recognition of a vice is seldom sufficient to break the habit that sustains the vice. In the future, a transformative genealogical criticism will need to follow a more strenuous agenda if peace with honor is to be different from assassins' lives during wartime.
