ABSTRACT

Being a middle manager in a secondary school is certain to raise a number of issues concerning time management. Demands are made on the middle manager’s time from a number of different directions, from senior management, from members of the department, from pupils, from parents and from agencies outside the school. There are a wide range of tasks and responsibilities to be undertaken, including planning and delivering one’s own lessons, drafting a scheme of work, managing the department’s budget, providing support and encouraging the development of newly qualified teachers (NQTs), dealing with the local inspectorate, writing reports, observing the lessons of colleagues, monitoring the progress of the department, ensuring record keeping, managing change and innovation.
