ABSTRACT

’The paperwork hit me like a ton of bricks. I’d inherited a department with no records about anything – just the sheer amount of stuff to be done overwhelmed me. There was no induction or process of support. At a simple level, in the filing system nothing was in place, there were no class lists or records of stats or averages for classes. There was no framework or skeleton of events – a timetable of what had to happen. I felt I was too late in carrying out the work all the time – for example, in preparing the staff timetable, in submitting details of pupils being entered for examinations. There were no job descriptions in the department.’
