ABSTRACT

The selection of staff is a major task involving a number of skills and requiring the exercise of one’s own values and judgement. We believe that the role of the middle manager in school improvement can be greatly enhanced if the middle manager is given significant responsibility for the selection of staff within their department. They know the subject area, they know the team of people in their department, and they also know their strengths and weaknesses. They are, in our view, in the best position to decide what qualities and experiences are needed to increase the performance of the department. The aim of this chapter is to outline the stages of the selection process, to encourage middle managers to be ready to participate in the process, to be able to communicate their views clearly to senior management and to be able to influence the decision making.
