ABSTRACT

Many schools are concerned to raise the level of attainment of pupils, particularly with regard to the attainment of external standards such as GCSE in the UK, or National Curriculum tests. Our view is that middle managers need to be concerned with the attainment of pupils at all levels of ability. In some schools, the major task is to raise general levels of attainment. In others it is to focus on the relative under-performance of the least able or the more able. The ideas we report here have been developed and used in a number of schools and are outlined more fully in an In-service Training Pack published by Framework Press entitled ‘Raising Achievement at GCSE’. The pack is designed for use by middle managers as a training resource.
