ABSTRACT

Earlier chapters of this book have introduced the notion of reflection on the practice of middle management as a key to improving management performance and developing the skills of management. In the previous chapter you are invited to identify your beliefs and values, and your personal qualities and skills. Another aspect influencing the effectiveness of your work as a middle manager is the nature of the organisation in which you work. Effective management is dependent both upon you fitting into the organisation and you having a positive effect upon it. As was outlined in Chapter 3, what may be effective management in one school may be inappropriate, ineffective or even disruptive in another.
