ABSTRACT

The only official statistics on gambling available in 1965 (the year the study began) were revenue from the duty levied on certain types of gambling, chiefly football pools; statistics relating to the grant and renewal of bookmakers’ permits and betting office licences; figures of totalizer receipts, and rather unreliable estimates of book-makers’ profits, based upon returns made by the bookmakers to the Horserace Betting Levy Board.
