ABSTRACT

The past half century has been distinguished by the rise of environmentalism, both as a political movement and a popular cultural concern. While the first half of the twentieth century saw the emergence, in both Europe and North America, of various organizations dedicated to the conservation or preservation of natural landscapes, it was only in the second half that concern with a broader range of environmental issues has emerged.
