ABSTRACT

Autism as a condition has had a relatively brief history, being first described by Kanner in 1943. Kanner noted unusual behaviors in some children marked by poor social interaction and rigid, repetitive patterns of behavior. These problems were evident from birth or the very early years of life. The condition is a neurodevelopmental disorder, caused by neurological anomalies, probably present at birth, which unfold as the child develops.
