ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the most common challenges facing those interested in tackling identity-based bullying and provides ideas about how to handle these barriers. In particular, Britney G Brinkman discusses challenges related to insufficient resources, anti-bullying policies and their implementation, difficulties engaging students, and barriers facing adult bystanders. She drew upon her own experiences working with schools and the barriers she have encountered while integrating the lessons learned by others doing similar work. She starts with resources because in some ways these are the most obvious and direct challenges to discuss. The chapter discusses the various interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics within schools that may impact school official's responses to identity-based bullying. The author applies Confronting Prejudiced Responses Model (CPR) to explore the various factors that may influence how adult educators respond to identity-based bullying and to highlight the possible barriers to intervention. The chapter focuses on forms of bullying that take place within schools and through in-person encounters.
