ABSTRACT

With each passing year the arrogance associated with the notion of a baseball ‘World Series’ involving only North America is made more obvious not only to the American public, but to Major League Baseball (MLB) as well. In 2006, over three quarters of a century after association football’s (soccer) first World Cup was played, Major League Baseball formally ventured into the era of global sport when the World Baseball Classic began on 7 March with 16 nations competing. I chronicled this tournament to assess baseball’s venture outside of North America, as well as to forge ahead on developing a working concept of globalization.
