Bennett Simon's essay, particularly the incident of parallel imagery he reports, sounded an echo in my own experience. Under what conditions, I wonder, do such startling phenomena occur? Suggested answers to this question, such as coincidence or increasingly parallel streams of thought induced by subliminal cues, lack explanatory power. Instead, the phenomena Simons describes seem impossible to explain in terms of any sensory processes we are familiar with.
