ABSTRACT

A scientific theory is simply a formal description of a pattern or patterns of expectation that we bring to a particular situation. When we do not know what to expect, we cannot become organized, and if we cannot become organized, we tend to become anxious. If that state of affairs lasts for any length of time, we cease to function effectively. So another way of looking at theory is to view it as a device for preventing, controlling, or resolving anxiety by creating order.
