ABSTRACT

The contributions of Dr. Stern and Dr. Sander are extraordinarily rich and challenging clarifications of our understanding of the developmental process. Specifically, both Stern and Sander have provided a complex framework within which we can begin to trace the ontogeny of the self. I would like to highlight some of the issues they have raised and try to integrate the ideas expressed in the two papers. I believe these papers complement each other and together articulate what hopefully is becoming a predominant view in developmental psychology.
