ABSTRACT

The Interfaith Health Care Ministries (IHCM) was incorporated in 1975 by the Diocese of Providence, Board of Rabbis, and the Rhode Island State Council of Churches. The chaplains provide pastoral care services for patients and families as well as educational programs for medical students and area clergy. In 1975, IHCM's mission was to provide educational programs for interested clergy, physicians, nurses, and other health care providers. The educational mission included establishing a nationally accredited clinical pastoral education program. Community representatives are elected because of their interest in the program and because they bring specific talents useful to the Board. The Rhode Island Foundation that gave program money and one from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to begin consumer-run drop-in centers for mentally ill individuals seeking community integration. A part-time office manager serves as the communication link between all parts of the program. Supervisors provide CPE through the center, provide administration, and care in one of the sponsoring agencies.
