ABSTRACT

From the time of José's enlistment, it seemed that the Army intended to take great care with his training. His fluency in foreign languages, including German, was a strong asset in that time of world warfare. He was not put into basic training with the regular infantry, but rather with the Signal Corps. Once his basic training was completed, the Army assigned José to Intelligence School. Because Army Intelligence involved work with sensitive and often classified information, acceptance into that service required a stringent security clearance. Once José was enrolled in the school, the Army began its routine background check on him and the other new students. Agents were sent to San Francisco to interview friends, neighbors, and family about Jose's character, abilities, social interactions, and morals.
