ABSTRACT

“On our way to Berlin, near the Rhine river, we came upon a concentration camp. We were assigned the liberation of the camp. It was very sad and very happy at the same time. In the camp were three girls from Russia. Their names were Luba, Vera, and Vala. They spoke only Russian and a little bit of German. They had been taken out of the Ukraine for labor. The colonel took them on and said to me. ‘This is going to be your squad. You are responsible for them. No hanky-panky. They will work for you, and you will train them.’ The colonel thought it was not befitting that the Germans see me doing laundry and serving and cooking. We were the conquerors and had to keep up that appearance. We had to show our ‘superiority.’
