ABSTRACT

Over the past century the number of foreigners in Paris has roughly doubled. Today the city holds greatest number of Chinese in all of Europe, it is one of the capitals of Armenian diaspora, and it contains major North African population. Indeed, the American occupation of Paris has grown steadily in almost every conceivable form of enterprise through the half-century since the war. Since World War II, in terms of exile due to political reasons, the largest wave of Latin Americans departing for Europe occurred after the military coup in Chile in 1973. This migration included many people Oeeing dictatorships in Argentina and Uruguay as well, some having sought refuge first in Chile under Salvador Allende. The social experiment that was Popular Unity government found sympathy with the French left just when the Cuban Revolution was becoming increasingly problematic so that for a while these exiles, despite their hardships, were seen overall as the heroic fighters for a shared ideal.
