ABSTRACT
Deforestation has in many countries provided a temporary escape valve from economic and social hardship. Very often deforestation only offers a respite from development pressures, pressures that can be dealt with effectively only at a more fundamental level. If such a fundamental approach is to be taken seriously, this in any case begs for a more complete analysis whereby the various economic linkages are specified.
