ABSTRACT

It is also said that the two people created thus were Altse hastUn and Altse asdzqq. In the language of Bilagaana, the White Man, they would be called First Man and First Woman.

... At the end of four days, Altse asdzqq, the First Woman, gave birth to twins. But they were neither entirely male nor entirely female. They were what the Navajo people call nadleeh ... (Zolbrod 1984, p 51)

-From the Navajo Creation Story In the Navajo "gender war," where men and women separate

from one another, the Nadleeh or sacred twins are so powerful they alone can bring about the reunification and continuation of the Human Race by reconciling the differences between First Man and First Woman (Zolbrod 1984:354). The nadleeh of the Navajo, their status and place in legend and history, are not unique in Native America.
