ABSTRACT

The first part of this book introduced genetic engineering in non-human life forms and illustrated the range of its applications in ten case studies. These were chosen especially to highlight the principal ethical questions which genetic manipulation is raising. The questions are gathered by topic and explored in more detail in the following chapters. Before tackling these more specific issues, however, many of the case studies pointed to certain basic questions which underlie the whole debate over genetic engineering, and these in turn influence many of the more detailed issues. This chapter focuses on these underlying questions, and in particular the intrinsic arguments used by both proponents and opponents of genetic engineering.
