ABSTRACT
Classical psychology, invoking the general distinction between agent and patient in the contact between things, 1 conceived of sense-data and sensory affects—pleasures and pains—as effects left by outside agents on the passivity of our sensibility, effects which then our active minds collate and interpret. It did not discern the violent force of our pains and our pleasures, which are not simply passive, but reactive.
